Te Reo Challenge

As part of our study about New Zealand's history we will be looking at Maori place names.  Can you match up some of these Maori words and work out the meanings of some places in New Zealand?

roto - lake
wanga (whanga) - bay or stretch of water
rua - two
nui - big
naki (ngaki) - shining
wai - water
awa - river
kanae - grey mullet (fish)
tara - mountain peak
puni - blocked
maunga - mountain
kato - flowing

  1. I can see wai - kato. Waikato means flowing water and that fits with the big river up by Hamilton!
